  • Short Description: The Exodus Decoded: Proof Behind Bible Stories? Documentary Producer Simcha Jacobovici Explains the Science Behind the Story of Exodus
  • Long Description:
Did thousands of frogs plague Egypt? What about Moses and the parting of the Red Sea? And did the Exodus really happen at all? Well, skeptics abound, saying the biblical story's a fable, but a new documentary called "The Exodus Decoded," airing this Sunday on the History Channel, may change some of those minds. It's from Oscar-winning director James Cameron and Emmy-winning documentarian Simcha Jacobovici, and it claims to present fresh evidence to prove the Exodus really did happen. After clip is shown, Jacobovici joins Lester Holt and explains that as an investigative filmmaker, he wanted to see if could bring his skills as an investigator, as a detective, to the story. "And the common wisdom is that there isn't a single shred of archaeological evidence to prove the biblical story. So I want to know if it's true. And what I saw--that it was all based on one date. It happened 3200 years ago. So I thought, `Well, maybe they're just looking at the wrong date,' and I did a really simple thing. I asked, `When does the Bible say it happened?' And the Bible says it happened 3500 years ago,
not 3200 years ago." Jacobovici notes: "Once we had the right pharaoh and the right date, the archaeological evidence opened up. We found the pharaoh who confronted Moses, we found the real Mt. Sinai. Sorry, all these tourists are going
up the wrong mountain. We found, finally, you know, an image from 3,500 years ago, carved in gold, of the lost ark of the covenant." He contends the evidence was hiding in plain sight. Jacobovici explains the science behind the myth: "Well, once the water turns red, once the water is contaminated--and the same thing happened in 1986 in Lake Nyos, Cameroon--'86, not 2,000 years ago--water turned red, the people got boils, and then 1800 people died in their sleep. Why? There was a gas
leak. It went through the water, iron turned it red. The people died from a gas leak. We look back at the Bible, exactly the same sequence--were in an earthquake zone, were in a gas zone. It couldn't be a coincidence. And once you understand that, of course, the fish die, because they can't jump out of the water. The frogs jump out of the water because they can...
God works through nature, for somebody who believes in God. The point is, I didn't get into theology or philosophy. My question was this: The common wisdom is it didn't happen. Did it happen? We went out, and we provided the
archaeological evidence and the scientific evidence to make a compelling argument that the Exodus is fact, not fiction."
